SUMMARY:Point Arena Lighthouse (almost) Full Worm Moon Night Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Point Arena Lighthouse continues its popular Full Moon Night Tours with an (almost) Full Worm Moon Night Tour on Saturday\, March 23. Gates open 7:30 p.m.\, tour starts around 8 p.m. The evening will feature a special presentation about the Light Station’s history and technology\, sweet and savory snacks accompanied by champagne or sparkling juice\, capped off by a guided “Climb to the Top” tour of the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast under the rising full moon – if the weather cooperates\, of course! An etched Point Arena Lighthouse souvenir champagne flute is included in the price of admission for each participant\, which is $50 per person. Reservations must be made at least three days in advance of the tour. While the tour is scheduled to coordinate with the full moon\, weather conditions may preclude lunar visibility. The tours are conducted regardless of weather conditions\, unless the Lighthouse Staff deems them to potentially cause safety issues for the guests. In the event the tour is cancelled\, guests will receive a full refund. \nAccording to the Old Farmer’s Almanac in Native American and early Colonial times the Full Moon in March was called the Full Worm Moon. The ground begins to soften and earthworm casts reappear\, inviting the return of robins. This has also been called the Sap Moon\, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins. \nThe Lighthouse offers Full Moon and (almost) Full Moon Night Tours throughout the year on the Saturday closest to the full moon if it doesn’t fall on that day. DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting\, including grinding your own Sumi Ink\, loading the Calligraphy Brush & applying the Dynasty-old Brush Strokes to rice paper\, creating Bamboo Flowers & more. This class includes Asian symbolism & philosophy\, enhancing the serenity that comes from ancient Asian traditions. \nAs a Chinese Brush Artist\, Andrea Allen has developed a unique style that combines the traditions of the Chinese Masters with a subtle\, contemporary flair. She studied with a Chinese Master for six years\, and has been painting and teaching in this style for over twenty years. \nAndrea utilizes many ancient Chinese techniques such as grinding her own Sumi ink\, often mixing it with watercolor\, loading the calligraphy brush\, and applying it to handmade rice paper\, with a minimal number of strokes to complete each painting. She carefully balances the unpainted and painted spaces in each composition\, creating a tranquil flow throughout each painting. \nAncient Chinese symbolism and philosophy influence her work\, enhancing the feeling of vital energy and serenity. The inherent effect is for the viewer to be effortlessly invited into each painting\, to experience a peaceful balance and harmony in a timeless continuum. \nAndrea has exhibited extensively throughout the Bay Area\, including the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. She teaches several classes in Chinese Brush painting for beginning and experienced students. Andrea also welcomes creating custom paintings\, upon request.

DESCRIPTION:Almost Fringe Festival returns to Point Arena\nBy Rozann Grunig\nThe unusual\, the bizarre\, just a bit whacky\, maybe even shocking – that’s what the Almost Fringe Festival is all about. Join the members of the Coast Highway Art Collective in Point Arena for a celebratory opening reception of this fun and free-form event on Saturday\, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Collective is hosting music and new works by its members. Although the opening is set to coincide with Almost Fringe Festivals around the globe\, the exhibit will be available for viewing at CHAC from April 6 to April 28.\nLoosely based on the International fringe art movement\, Mendocino County celebrates this as a month-long festival at several venues to celebrate all of the creative happenings countywide\, from traditional to cutting edge and artsy to agrarian.\nThe original Fringe Festival is held annually in Edinburgh\, Scotland. It is the largest art festival in the world. This festival spans 25 days and includes events in 294 venues in the following categories theatre\, comedy\, dance\, physical theatre\, circus\, cabaret\, children’s shows\, musicals\, opera\, music\, spoken word\, exhibitions and events.\nLocally\, the festival is being promoted by the Point Arena Merchants Association. The goal of the festival is to have a culturally diverse festival that reflects the complexity of our amazing community. Local merchants and restaurants to will be participating to create a fun and engaging festival street scene.\nThe Coast Highway Art Collective is joining into the festivities with artists Valerie Hebert\, felt earrings; Cindy Morey\, photography; Linda Green\, ceramics and painting\, Perry Hoffman\, photography and ceramics; Ling-Yen Jones\, jewelry; Rozann Grunig\, photography and greeting cards; Elizabeth Solomon\, fabric art and drawings; Sarah Alice Britton\, jewelry; Katy Balthazar\, chainmail dresses; Geraldine LiaBraaten\, photography and Hal Fogel\, photography. This class includes Asian symbolism & philosophy\, enhancing the serenity that comes from ancient Asian traditions. \nAs a Chinese Brush Artist\, Andrea Allen has developed a unique style that combines the traditions of the Chinese Masters with a subtle\, contemporary flair. She studied with a Chinese Master for six years\, and has been painting and teaching in this style for over twenty years. \nAndrea utilizes many ancient Chinese techniques such as grinding her own Sumi ink\, often mixing it with watercolor\, loading the calligraphy brush\, and applying it to handmade rice paper\, with a minimal number of strokes to complete each painting. She carefully balances the unpainted and painted spaces in each composition\, creating a tranquil flow throughout each painting. \nAncient Chinese symbolism and philosophy influence her work\, enhancing the feeling of vital energy and serenity. The inherent effect is for the viewer to be effortlessly invited into each painting\, to experience a peaceful balance and harmony in a timeless continuum. \nAndrea has exhibited extensively throughout the Bay Area\, including the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. SUMMARY:If We Could Hear Trees Talk
DESCRIPTION:“If We Could Hear Trees Talk” a special showing by Dotti Cichon will open on Friday\, April 12 at 4 pm in the Jacob Foyer at Gualala Arts. \n“Intrigued by research showing that trees communicate with each other via their root systems to nurture and protect each other\, I embarked on a project to learn more about trees and forests. By absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen\, trees help prevent global warming and climate change and provide the atmosphere that makes life on Earth possible. \nRainforests being clear cut purely for profit and the loss of old growth redwoods right here in California due to greed or wildfires caused by climate change saddens me. I wanted to express my emotional reaction to these issues visually with my photography so I experimented by manipulating colors in photos to show trees as voids and/or presenting them upside down with their crowns appearing as roots. But there is a caveat that I write about in my closing paragraph. \nThe resulting photos are somewhat strange but seductively beautiful to draw people in to take a closer look and question “What is going on here” They are meant to appeal to viewers on a subliminal emotional level and entice them to learn more about my photos and thus learn more about the importance of trees and the threat to life on Earth from deforestation. \nTo further emphasize the enormity of the loss of trees and to convey a sense of being in a forest\, I present photos large-scale on heavily textured fabric 6 feet x 3 ½ feet either vertical or horizontal to appeal to all kinds of people to look more closely at them in this unusual format for photography. They are not just for people who are interested in photography who go to museums and galleries. I want this project to be able to be exhibited in other public spaces where they can be seen by everyday people in everyday situations so more people can experience them. \nBut\, for a more conventional presentation but not completely traditional\, I present photos on metallic photo paper. The metallic photo paper accentuates the light values in the images so they have an eerie glow\, also drawing people in to take a closer look. These strangely beautiful images are meant to open hearts and minds. \nI want beauty to be the vehicle that draws people in to learn more about these issues. I don’t want to dwell on the negativity of loss. I want my work to show that life can return to forests after devastation and that there is hope for the future if we act proactively now. So\, instead of looking at the light trunks as voids\, I hope to change perceptions to see them as glowing hope for the future. It’s my goal to use my strange photography presented in unconventional ways to draw attention to these important issues confronting humankind as well as to present exceptional art accessible and understandable by all.”

Turning Trash into Treasures \nIn the 1967 rom-com The Graduate\, Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) is urged during his graduation party to join a business dealing in plastics. But no one appears even vaguely aware of the disasters this “material of the future” will wreak on the planet. We\, in that very future\, are only too conscious of the unintended consequences that plastics have caused. Because artists have the capacity to raise awareness about such issues and transform garbage into art work\, this exhibit will provoke\, amuse\, educate\, and inspire us to rethink our own consumption habits. \nThe artists invited to show in this exhibit have created interesting\, playful\, beautiful\, and powerful objects by upcycling plastic found on our beaches as well as in our homes and workplaces\, restaurants and cafés. Come stroll the 23 acres of grounds and watch the ocean for migrating gray whales\, and wind and weather permitting the Berkeley Kite Wranglers will be flying their huge and colorful kites overhead. Scott & Tree Mercer of the Mendonoma Whale & Seal Study will be on hand to answer questions about the marine mammals that frequent our coast. Check out the Whale Trail interpretive panel next to the California Native Plant garden that showcases the marine mammals that frequent the waters that surround the Light Station. The Light Station Store will be offering sale prices on kites\, whale related gifts and other items. Waffles\, including gluten-free\, and assorted organic baked goods from THE FARM will be available for purchase in the Fog Signal Building Museum. The Lighthouse is located at 45500 Lighthouse Road just north of Point Arena.

Come stroll the 23 acres of grounds and watch the ocean for migrating gray whales\, and wind and weather permitting the Berkeley Kite Wranglers will be flying their huge and colorful kites overhead. Scott & Tree Mercer of the Mendonoma Whale & Seal Study will be on hand to answer questions about the marine mammals that frequent our coast. Check out the Whale Trail interpretive panel next to the California Native Plant garden that showcases the marine mammals that frequent the waters that surround the Light Station. The Light Station Store will be offering sale prices on kites\, whale related gifts and other items. Waffles\, including gluten-free\, and assorted organic baked goods from THE FARM will be available for purchase in the Fog Signal Building Museum. The Lighthouse is located at 45500 Lighthouse Road just north of Point Arena. \nFormed at the turn of the Millennium\, the Berkeley Kite Wranglers fly a collection of kites that contains nearly 30\,000 square feet of giant creature kites – the largest of their kind in the world. The giant octopus kites have been a particularly popular sight in past years. Each one is 20 feet wide and nearly 100 feet long. The pod\, or ‘Octopile’ as the team likes to call it\, flies in perfect formation. They have previously flown giant blue\, humpback and killer whale kites as well as gecko\, fish and cat kites. The Wranglers will fly from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Bring your own kite to fly or purchase one from a large selection of kites on sale in the Light Station Store\, which will also have several whale themed items on sale. \nThe northern migration of the gray whales will be featuring the mothers and recently born calves making their way north from the birthing lagoons in Baja California back to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea near Alaska. Watch these graceful gentle giants swim past the Light Station peninsula from the grounds or the Whale Watch Room in the Fog Signal Building\, and chat with the Mercers about the details of this amazing migration. \nThe Wind & Whale Celebration is part of the Point Arena Merchants Association (PAMA) Almost Fringe Festival which will be taking place in and around downtown Point Arena from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Special events\, food\, sales\, live music and more will be offered throughout Point Arena. SUMMARY:Pine Needle Basket Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Join Bea Acosta for a fun and creative workshop on how to make a pine needle basket. You will make a small basket 4”-5” in diameter \, learn different stitches and three different methods of starting a center. The workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday\, April 20 and 21 from 11 am to 4 pm. The fee is $80 for Gualala Arts Members and $110 for non-members\, plus a $40 materials fee payable to the instructor.\nYou will need to bring needle nose pliers\, a small hand towel\, and small scissors and beads. You will make a small basket of about 4 to 5 inches in diameter\, using different stitches and methods to start the center. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill and create a beautiful and unique basket. \nMaterials List \nNeedle Nose pliers\, small hand towel\, small scissors\, beads \nAbout Bea Acosta \nAfter searching for most of my adult life for a creative media I discovered my hands drawn to clay in 2000. The majority of my learning has taken place under the tutelage of Kay Like\,( Brandybuck Studios) who provided a nurturing studio in which to explore\, be creative and turn failures into learning experiences. \nI am drawn to making masks and vessels with clay. I am mostly a hand builder\, employing the slab and coil method with the inclination to use natural elements to finish my pieces. To that end I have explored different patinas such as burnishing combined with smolder fire\, saggar fire incorporating seaweed\, salted corn husks and copper wire\, using red or white terra sigillata with horsehair and using acrylic paints . \nI learned how to make pine needle baskets to enhance my pottery in about 2004. I am now devoting most of my creative time to fashioning baskets and basket forms with pine needles\, Watsonia leaves\, Amaryllis leaves\, sweet grass and sea grass. I am delighted in the shapes and colors I weave together to make a one-of-a-kind basket or basket form. I enjoy combining colors and using beads to bring out the final form. \nI love the earthiness of the material used in basket making and the reverence shown to the natural elements that are collected under the mother tree. I can sense the ancestors deep in my cells as I create. \nI have branched out in the past several years and started making baskets that do not serve a normal basket function. I call them pine needle woven creations. There are gaps in the coils with beads that usually fill the space. Creating a flowing nonfunctional basket is like being in a free-form dance. It is very meditative and a patience type of creativity. \nI rarely develop a plan as I create with clay or pine needles. I am always assessing and letting the piece speak to me\, whatever appears is meant to be. I am blessed to live on the coast surrounded by the magic of nature that always inspires me and evokes the feeling of another time and place.
